Chinese Cultural Week: Making Chinese New Year Foods

Objectives:

To introduce children to Chinese New Year culture and customs through making traditional festival foods, helping them learn about the signature dishes prepared by different grade levels. The activity aims to foster children’s life skills, hands-on abilities, and teamwork spirit, while allowing them to experience the festive atmosphere through hands-on participation and build an interest in and appreciation for traditional culture.

Activity Outline:

  1. K1 children make tangyuan, K2 children make nian gao, and K3 children make turnip cake. Through hand muscle operations such as kneading and mixing, children of all grade levels experience the joy of making different Chinese New Year foods in stages, gaining a concrete understanding of traditional New Year snacks through hands-on practice.
  2. Children across all three grade levels enjoy the different traditional New Year delicacies, learning about Lunar New Year culture through practical experience. When tasting the festive foods they made themselves, the children deeply appreciate the auspicious meanings of family reunion and reaching higher step-by-step, thereby transforming their gustatory experience into a cultural identification with traditional Chinese culture.
